Causes of Toothache in Children
Toothache in children usually occurs for the following reasons:
Tooth decay
The process of milk teeth falling out (tooth change)
Gum inflammation or infections
Impacted wisdom teeth (in older children)
Dental trauma
What can you do at home to relieve toothache in children?
Gargle with Salt Water: Gargling gently with warm salt water reduces inflammation in the mouth and provides relief. (Caution should be exercised in children under 6 years of age.)
Cold Compress: An ice pack or cold cloth can be applied to the painful area from the outside of the cheek. This reduces swelling and pain.
Painkillers: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be given to children in appropriate doses upon doctor's recommendation.
Soft and Warm Nutrition: Avoid hard, hot or very cold foods and drinks.
Pay Attention to Oral Hygiene: Brush the child's teeth gently, it is important to keep the sore area especially clean.
When Should You Go to the Dentist?
If the pain does not go away within 1-2 days
If there is facial swelling, fever or general weakness
If it becomes difficult for the child to eat and sleep
If there is a bad smell or inflammation coming from the mouth
