Causes of Toothache in Children

Toothache in children usually occurs for the following reasons:

  • Tooth decay

  • The process of milk teeth falling out (tooth change)

  • Gum inflammation or infections

  • Tooth enamel sensitivity

  • Impacted wisdom teeth (in older children)

  • Dental trauma

What can you do at home to relieve toothache in children?

  1. Gargle with Salt Water: Gargling gently with warm salt water reduces inflammation in the mouth and provides relief. (Caution should be exercised in children under 6 years of age.)

  2. Cold Compress: An ice pack or cold cloth can be applied to the painful area from the outside of the cheek. This reduces swelling and pain.

  3. Painkillers: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be given to children in appropriate doses upon doctor's recommendation.

  4. Soft and Warm Nutrition: Avoid hard, hot or very cold foods and drinks.

  5. Pay Attention to Oral Hygiene: Brush the child's teeth gently, it is important to keep the sore area especially clean.

When Should You Go to the Dentist?

  • If the pain does not go away within 1-2 days

  • If there is facial swelling, fever or general weakness

  • If it becomes difficult for the child to eat and sleep

  • If there is a bad smell or inflammation coming from the mouth
