What Is a Sinus Lift Procedure?

A sinus lift (also known as sinus augmentation) is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the back teeth, between the jawbone and the maxillary sinuses located on either side of the nose. To perform this procedure, the sinus membrane is gently lifted upward, creating space for bone graft material.
When Is a Sinus Lift Needed?
Dental implants require sufficient healthy bone for long-term stability. However, after tooth extraction, the bone in the upper jaw may gradually shrink. In these cases, there may not be enough bone height to securely support a dental implant.
A sinus lift increases the available bone height, making implant placement possible. This procedure allows patients with bone loss to benefit from a long-lasting and reliable solution for replacing missing or failing teeth with dental implants.
How Is the Sinus Lift Procedure Performed?
The success of a dental implant depends largely on the quantity and quality of the bone at the implant site. The upper back jaw is one of the most challenging areas for implant placement because of its limited bone volume and its close proximity to the maxillary sinus.
If bone has been lost due to periodontal disease, trauma, or tooth loss, there may not be enough bone to support an implant.
A sinus lift surgery corrects this problem by raising the sinus floor and creating space for new bone formation. Several surgical techniques can be used depending on the amount of available bone.
In a common technique, a small incision is made to expose the jawbone. A small opening is then created in the bone, and the sinus membrane is carefully lifted upward. The resulting space beneath the membrane is filled with bone graft material.
The incision is then closed with sutures, allowing the healing process to begin.
When there is very little existing bone beneath the sinus, a small window is created in the side wall of the upper jaw. Through this opening, the sinus membrane is gently separated, and bone graft material is placed beneath it. This technique is known as an open sinus lift and is more complex than the closed technique used when more natural bone is present.
What Is the Typical Recovery Time?
Following sinus lift surgery, the healing process generally takes at least four months.
Dental implants are typically placed 4 to 12 months after the procedure, depending on the amount of bone graft used and your body's individual healing response. This healing period allows the grafted bone to integrate with your natural jawbone and create a stable foundation for implants.
Sinus lift surgery has been shown to significantly improve the long-term success of dental implants. Most patients experience only mild discomfort during recovery.
What Materials Do We Use for Bone Grafting?
We use high-quality, sterile bone graft materials obtained from reliable sources. These may include:
Bone taken from another area of your own jaw (autogenous bone).
Premium xenograft materials, commonly derived from bovine (cow) or equine (horse) sources.
Advanced synthetic bone graft materials.
All graft materials are produced under strict sterile conditions, sterilized using gamma irradiation, and are certified according to FDA and WHO standards.
Who Is Not a Suitable Candidate for a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift procedure may not be recommended for patients who have:
A history of radiotherapy to the head or neck.
Certain systemic diseases, including uncontrolled diabetes or disorders affecting bone metabolism.
An active sinus infection (sinusitis).
Heavy smoking habits, particularly smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day.
